Hi Guys!!!

Just joined, having been to see "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" this morning, I realised that the only Star Wars forum I belong to is a collectors' forum (I collect ship models) and I really wanted to find somewhere to chat about the film.

So I wandered onto StarWars.com and had a look through the links.  While I was there I found a link to here and realised that it was possible that you could help me realise a long-term dream.

I would really like to learn the basics of lightsabre (lightsaber - sorry I'm British!) combat.

Actually, ever since I discovered Dungeons and Dragons, and watched the film "Highlander" I've wanted to learn sword combat.  Although, as a Dancer (and a part-time model), I'm more interested in it as a performance-art than as a martial art I guess.  This seems in-accord with the principles of your group which is why I joined up!  Well... the forums anyway.

Swordplay classes are few and far between, very expensive and none of them seem to happen in an area local to me, so I have been thwarted in my attempts.  Then again; "Always with you it cannot be done!  Hear you nothing that I say?"

I was watching a TV programme the other night about Star Wars fans and they showed that lightsabre tournements actually happen in an organised way, and presumably there is training available?  I am assuming this has its basis in something like Kendo (although I have over the last few years been trying to read my way through the Star Wars Expanded Universe and I'm aware that, in the books and comics at least, there are seven forms of lightsabre combat).

So... I saw Star Wars (on initial release, of course, Episode IV was just called "Star Wars"!!!) when I was six years old and I have been a passionate fan ever since.  I would love to be involved in Saber Guild performances, but first I guess I need to learn the form.

So... Padawan here, looking for guidance.  Who can start me on my journey?

Kind Regards
Dave

Hi guys! I was beginning to think there was nobody out there!

How do I find out about British Chapters? How do I learn Lightsabre combat moves? And are the costume rules as restrictive as they seem?

Kind Regards
Dave

At this time we don't have hey Saber Guild in the UK. However we're always looking for new temples that pop up. If you go to our main website you'll find all the rules and regulations on our charter as well as our costuming requirements and our standards. To become your own Temple you need at least 5 official members that have been approved through the Saber Guild. Every Temple teaches a different style of performance a lot of us have martial art experience or stage combat experience or mixture. Even some Temple strictly just watch the films and learn it from that so there's many ways you can learn.

Right now we don't have a temple in the UK, but there has been a bunch of interest so I don't think starting one up would be all that difficult. If I recall, you need 5 members that have had costumes approved in order to start a temple where you are.

For the combat forms, I know my temple puts up examples on YouTube.
Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VE8oUvmPh7c

As for the costume rules, we do allow some creative license, provided the costume looks as though it came out of the Star Wars universe. My own costume is not "traditional" Sith, but was approved due to the style and quality of construction being in line with what you'd see in the movies or cartoons.

Here's an example of one of our performances. I'm the Twi'lek Sith Lord, Darth Vayne.

Well I'd be interested in founding a temple, but I'm barely a Padawan right now...

You don't have to be super experienced, just have the time and desire to do it! Very Happy

Okay, so - Lightsabre training and costume-making aside - how do I go about establishing a UK Temple please?  Can I have some advice.
